I have always had a problem with character development and recently found a very informative site called ON Creative Writing Exercises. I learnt that in order to improve your character development skills you had to pay attention and make sure that your characters did not lack depth. In order to make sure of that you have to think about who your character is, put yourself in the character’s shoes and place him/her in different situations. For example, the hero in a romance novel needs to come to life. Your readers must actually be able to visualize him, his strong bone structure, and his powerful presence. The characters in our books should be treated like characters in a movie. Our description of them needs to come to life in order for our readers to understand and bond with them. I found that the pages on ON Creative Writing Exercises improved my writing and character development immensely.
